Depending on the area being scanned, you may need to expose the specific body part (for example, shoulder, back). Remove any jewellery near the scan area, as it can interfere with the imaging. No other special preparation is required.

In general, the procedure for musculoskeletal ultrasound scanning involves the following steps:

  • You will be positioned to expose the area needing examination, such as a shoulder, knee, or wrist.
  • A clear gel is applied to the skin, which helps eliminate air pockets and enhances sound wave transmission between the ultrasound probe and your body.
  • The technician or radiologist moves a small ultrasound transducer over the gel-covered skin. The transducer emits high-frequency sound waves that bounce off tissues, returning as echoes that form real-time images on the monitor.
  • You may be asked to move the joint or muscle to allow the technician to observe dynamic functions, such as tendons sliding or muscles contracting. This is especially useful for detecting tears, inflammation, or restricted movement.
  • The technician captures still images and videos of any areas of concern for further evaluation. The specialist will examine these for issues like tendon tears, fluid buildup, or inflammation.
  • Once the scanning is complete, the gel is wiped off, and you may be given instructions based on the findings.

The entire process is painless, non-invasive, and usually takes around 15-30 minutes, making it a quick and effective diagnostic tool for musculoskeletal concerns.

What Happens After a Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Scanning?

You can typically resume normal activities right away, as there is no recovery time needed. The captured images and videos are analysed by a radiologist or specialist, who interprets any abnormalities or issues. A report is generated based on the findings, detailing any observations like tears, inflammation, fluid buildup, or structural irregularities in the muscles, tendons, or joints. Your healthcare provider will discuss the results with you.
